In this assignment I will be evaluating a website that is relevant to my degree. The site that I’ll be evaluating is Micro Direct. This is a website of a business that sells I.T products to the U.K. This website is aimed at a wide range of audience for example buying technology products or seeking a service for personal, trade and corporate use.

Strengths

The layout of the Home Page, (see below) is very simple and easy to use. This   gives a clear indication of what the site sells and how easy it is to locate a product.  This has been achieved by the large labeled sub titles of which each category a product falls under.

I find that another strength of this web site is that it shows what product you have recently viewed, on the right hand site of any page. This is a very helpful tool to navigate back to the products that you have already viewed.

I decided to use a search engine, Google, to see what position the company (Micro Direct) came. The web site was positioned first, second and third on the front page. The website is also a sponsored link for Google checkout which makes it a highlighted link. Being a highlighted link on Google is proven for a company to receive more view on their site.

Weakness

On certain pages of the web site I found that there were a couple of layout issues, for example spaces that were being wasted on a web page. So I opened the same web page in Fire Fox, to see if the problem would still occur. The same problem didn’t occur, so this is a weakness for the site that certain pages are not properly laid out on different internet browsers. Here is the page on Internet Explorer. If you open the same page on Fire Fox, the difference in layout is clearly visible.

Tasks

I am now going to be conducting a search for a Samsung monitor within the price range of (£80-£120). On the Monitors Home Page there was a menu on the left hand side of what brand of monitors that they sold. I clicked on Samsung, the site then gave me an option of which price range I wanted, the result was nine Samsung monitors within my price range. I found it extremely easy to find what I was looking for. 

The second task I decided to perform was to see how easy the process was to buy a product. The products that I wanted to buy went into a basket, this can be viewed on any page in the top right corner. Once you have finished buying a product you click onto the basket, this takes you to the checkout. For me to successfully buy a product I had to create an account for either pay pal or micro direct. As I was already an existing pay pal account user. I found it extremely easy to buy a product. For me to conduct a fair judgment of payment, I decided to create a micro direct account. Again I found this easy and simple to do.

 Micro blogging is a web service that allows you as the blogger or as the subscriber to broadcast short messages which is usually limited to 140 characters. These blogs can be made private or can be made for the public to be viewed. Applications have been introduced so that these micro blogs can be delivered as soon as they are posted onto the subscriber’s desktop or even sent to their phone. Micro blogging has helped me, this is because I use coke zone  and coke zone has their own micro blog service which is on twitter , this has allowed me to keep up to date with their latest promotions this helps me understand prices of products which are in the market, and helps me with maths because of the numbers which are involved. I also get live updates on my phone from skysports that keep me informed about the latest’s football news. There is also an application’s that allow me to download the latest podcast straight on to my iPod.  Micro Blogging is also used for educational purposes.
